Assignment of Final Exam

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Choosing the Topic
Tim Gautreaux, the most well-known name of Timothy Martin Gautreaux, is a thoughtful novelist and short story writer in residence at southeastern Lousiana University. Tim Gautreaux was born on October 19, 1947 in Morgan City. His first novel, The Next Step in the Dance has published and got the award as “Novel of the Year” by the Southeastern Booksellers Association in 1999. He also wrote some short stories, for instances, Welding with Children and Same Place, Same Things.
Dancing with One-Armed Gal was wonderful story that has written by Tim Gautreaux. This story existed in New Stories from South 2000 – The Year’s Best Book in which was edited by Shannon Ravenel. This story told about a man named Iry Boudreaux who has just deposed from his job because of the wrong accusation to himself. Then, he decided to enjoy a trip in order to make him feel relaxed. On the way, he met a late thirties woman with the tawny skin. She was the one-armed gal who was fired too from her lovely job as a lecturer in a university. Having several days together with her, Iry began to understand her problem where it was exactly harder than his own problem. Many precious things that he could get from Claudine Glover as the main woman character in this story.
Furthermore, one of many interesting things that I found in this wonderful is related to the characters, especially the character of Claudine Glover as the one-armed woman. I assume that Claudine Glover as the 16th African-American is unique woman in this story.

According to the previous background of choosing the topic, the statement of problem can be formulated as follows how does the interesting character of woman influence the reader?

1.4 Theoretical Approach
Actually, there are many kinds of theoretical approach that can be used to analyze this thoughtful story. However, the writer tends to use the objective approach in which it is an important approach that focuses on the elements literary work itself.

1.5 Method of the Study
In order to create a good result in this paper, the writer used the descriptive analysis method. By this method, the writer tried to describe some facts that are followed by its analysis.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

2.1 THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF CLAUDINE GLOVER

Claudine Glover is the main woman character in Dancing with One-Armed Gal Story. She is the late thirties African-American woman who lose her job as the University teacher because of several unacceptable reasons. Due to the fact that she is a gay and black skinned woman, she was limited by her environment to do everything that she likes. Even, her surrounding thinks that she is disable woman because she lost one of her arms since she got the horse accident. However, her personalities are really interesting to analyze by the writer.

a. Extrovert Woman
In the first meeting, Claudine Glover is really talkative. When she hitchhiked on the Iry’s car, she always talks along the way. Of course, it makes her surrounding feel annoyed then. Somehow, the surprising thing that she showed is she never shy to tell everyone about her problem life.

“I’ve never hitchhiked before; I was on my way from New Orleans where I just lose my job, all of things. My car was a little old, maybe too old, I think.... I just need a ride to the next decent-size town so…” She went on and on. (Page 60)

The woman talked and talked. Iry stopped for lunch over the Texas border at a roadside café, figuring a meal would stop her mouth for a while. (Page 62)

And,
“I am a professor of women’s studies,” she said. Her voice nipping like a Chihuahua’s at syllable. “It took me a long time to get that position and now, after four years of teaching, I lost it.” (Page 61)

Those quotation explain that she is right the extrovert main woman character.

b. Unpredictable Woman
Sometimes, woman are calm in the other hand they are talkative. They tend to laugh but it can change to cry in sudden at the same time. Hence, women are also unpredictable person for some people, especially for men.

“Well, I don’t really relate well to most men.” She looked at him carefully for a moment, and then announced, “I’m a lesbian.”
Iry pretended to look at something in his rearview mirror, wondering what kind of person would say that to a stranger. He figured she must be an intellectual, educated in the north. “That mean you like women?’ he asked “Yes.” (Page 60)

The quotation above shows that the Claudine Glover was the unpredictable woman. She made the other character become so surprised with either her statement or attitude. No one can imagine that she has told the truth thing about herself to the new people.

c. Melancholies Strong-hearted Woman
Woman is a special gift from God. Although she is not strong as a man, but his strong heart can destroy all of possibilities. When they are in down, they still try hard to keep standing in order to survive from any obstacles.

“When I hear that music,” she began. “I think of my father and his Mexican wranglers sitting out under a tree… I think of their laughter and not being able to understand any of it, because I never found one thing to laugh about in that blistered moonscape we live on.” (Page 64)

And,

She raised her chin, “Don’t belittle what I do.” (Page 67)

This quotation tells us that she is autonomous strong woman. She believes that what she has done is the best of her although, many people think that it is not perfect.

d. Pessimistic Women

Unfortunately, the character in this story tends to become a weak woman in the end. She is easier to give up on facing the problem. She looks like a tiring person because of unreasonable things that she got.

“Tell them how rare a bird I am, how I’ll feel their quotas in one shot. Aw, geez.” She began digging in her bag. “I need a Prozac. I’m sinking down, down. (Page 68)

“You going to say to them that you’re a good teacher… Those form?”
“I’m a crippled black woman and gay feminist.” She put her elbows on the table. “I’m a shoo-in for the job.” (Page 69)

She is like a bee which trapped in bad fate. The discrimination has poisoned her life. She might be happy at the first because she has ever touch the academic world as her beloved dream, but she is down in the dump at the end because the unwanted things come closer to her one by one.

There was a sigh on the line. “You don’t understand the academic world. Decent jobs are so scarce. I have to do whatever it takes.”..
“You’re straight white woman who’s a good teacher because she loves what she is doing.”
“You’re racist.”
“How many black people have you danced with?”
She began to cry into the phone,” I’m a gay African American woman who was crippled by a horse.” (Page 72)

Related to the conversation above, it can be drawn that Claudine felt really depressed.
Because of her appearance, no one wanted to give her a job. She showed it by crying before she conveys her last sentence on the phone.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION

Regarding to the discussion in the previous chapter, the writer can conclude that the main woman character of Claudine Glover in Dancing with One-Armed Gal is a kind of complex (round) character. Complex (round) character is obviously more lifelike than the simple, because in life people are not simply embodiments of single attitude. She is the protagonist in this story which has some interesting personalities there are extrovert, unpredictable, melancholies strong-hearted and pessimistic woman. Therefore, women are unique.
Furthermore, the writer tends to explore the character by doing some observation included the using of objective theoretical approach and descriptive analysis method. The author basically used the dramatic method in delivering this story. Thus, the writer has a chance to figure out the character through the words and action in this story. Tim Gautreaux was already created a great literary work by appearing of Claudine Glover as the main woman character in this story.

How pollution effects on me

The Disrupting Flying White Ghost

Nowadays, the life living of earth is in danger. The hot temperature on it has been increasing day by day. It occurs because of the high amount of pollution in our surrounding. There is no doubt that excessive levels of pollution are causing a lot of damage in the environment. Due to the modernization era, the pollution cases have been decaying everything not only the healthy environment but also my beloved life. I wished to breathe in my life comfortably. I wanted to enjoy the spreading fresh air freely in every second of my life. Therefore, I definitely hate the smoke. The smoke has altered the spreading fresh air become a flying white ghost which has been disrupting my beloved life. This disrupting flying ghost was getting on my nerves recently.
On Sunday morning, the beautiful grumble voice of my mother woke me up in a sudden. She held her ugly long broom exactly in front of my face. Then, she pointed it to the three big buckets which is full of dirty clothes beside the toilet. I was speechless while noticing her angry face. I showed her a nod directly. It meant I should move from the bedroom to the toilet soon. I received a command as a regular servant on Sunday who had to wash those three big buckets of dirty clothes. Two hours later, I took a breath deeply. While erasing my forehead sweat, I had finished my washing activity and put the clothes up in the drying ground.
When I was sitting down calmly in the kitchen, surprisingly I got the couch and I was so difficult to breathe. Everything was seen hazy because of the smoke which filled my house. In a hurry, I tried to check all of stuff that could cause smoke. I did not find anything wrong in my house. Then, I went out of the house in order to give myself space to breathe well and I got the source of this panic event. In fact, the smoke came from the trash burning that located right behind my house. “Oh, I see!”, I felt better knowing that my house was safe because it was just a smoke from trash burning. Although that smoke made me difficult to breath, personally I thought this smoke would not give me really bad effect.
I looked for the towel in order to take a bath. When I took it, suddenly my hands and my legs became so numb. My blood flew very fast and my heart bit very quick. I found very bad smell in all of my drying clothes. I was sure it was caused by the smoke which came from the trash burning several hours ago. Without having a long thought, I walked rashly to the location of that trash burning. I was angry while grumbling loudly along the way. Unluckily, someone who did it had escaped without any sign. I cursed him cruelly. I hoped that guy would suffer this kind of panic event more than me. It was getting on my nerves at that time. That smoke made my clothes in the drying ground so stinky and I should rewash all of it. “God, please strengthen me!” I was going to cry emotionally in redoing that tired activity.
Every kinds of smoke are like a disrupting flying ghost for me in term of pollution cases. Wherever and whenever I go, I would either scream loudly or hide rashly because this disrupting flying ghost haunted me. I hated to experience an event that made my stuffs became so stinky. I always showed my bad angry face when I found it. I could not keep my horses in front of the people who caused it. In short, this part of air pollution had decayed my beloved life.

Prose Analysis

The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis
By Rizka Elliyin (10320023)

The Yellow Wallpaper is a thoughtful story which was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This story was first published in 1899 by Small & Maynard Boston, MA. The Yellow Wallpaper tells about the problem of a family and the mystery of The Yellow Wallpaper that this family had.
First character in this story is the woman as the protagonist and as the narrator too, who  disagree with her husband thinking. John, her husband is the antagonist who works as a doctor. He is a flat character as a successful doctor who take care his wife’s health. Afterwards, the woman, the john’s wife is the round character who is annoyed because of the wallpaper itself. Actually, the direct method of characterization was applied in this story. The narrator visualizes the character by telling it directly in the story.
The setting is in a rented house during the summer. The house is the colonial mention that the woman guessed is scared. The house is surrounded by gardens and woods with a lovely shaded winding road. Somehow, the room in which the woman stays is the main setting. The scared yellow wallpaper is located at that room. Suddenly, the woman feels that the wallpaper became a moving prison while john never notices about its presence.
This story has an interesting plot with chronological order. The exposition happens when the narrator or the woman feels bad in the rented house, then when the woman want to spent her time writing but her husband forces her to take a rest. The rising action takes place when the woman begins despondent with the shades of someone who trapped within the yellow wallpaper. The climax happens when the narrator or the woman is definitely getting crazy and do not know what to do to face that wallpaper. The falling action is when john tries to know about his wife’s desire. The denouement occurs when john is really confused  to face of his wife’s craziness. The conclusion happens when the narrator or the wife try hard  to pass the mystery of wallpaper in which she has reached a freedom at the end.
The surprised horror thing in this story is the narrator gets the difficulty to understand her own self. She observes herself has a relationship with someone who trapped in wallpaper. However, she has brought herself apart in getting free of it. In short, it is a very thoughtful story in which the reader should observe deeply in order to catch the whole implicit and explicit meaning of it.

Narrative Short Essay

The Unforgettable Saturday at Homestay

My homestay was the annoying place. Everyone did their own businesses which made it crowded all the time. They speak loudly each others, listen to the highest degree volume of music, and have an impersonal chat when they were standing in line in front of the bathroom. All of my friends usually go home on weekend. Unfortunately, my roommate also went home this weekend. Somehow, I decided to stay at homestay because my home is too far. Having a little surprise at the end, I have to pass my day although I was alone.

I woke up late on Saturday morning. I glanced at my alarm clock on the table. Then, I closed my eyes to sleep again. A little while later, I was shocked that it had already 7 a.m. “Damn it! Why does no one wake me up?”  I screamed. “God, I am alone here”. I realized it while scratching my head spontaneously. I felt hungry; I looked for something rashly in my food box. In fact, I found nothing to eat. I began either despondent or desperate. At noon, I was definitely starving. No one existed whom I could beg for some foods. So, I decided to buy some foods in the nearest shop. I rode my bike quickly, but I only got two small pieces of bread there.

When night came, my homestay was really quiet. It seemed that I was in a horrible grave. Therefore, I watched some funny videos on my laptop to kill my fear. Suddenly, the lamp turned off. I could not see anything except the little light from my laptop screen. After that, I heard someone knocking the door of my room. The sounds of knocking became harder and harder. I opened the door fearfully and found the person right in front of me. She is the owner of my homestay standing with her daughter. She gave me a red square box. The tempting fragrance came from it. In hurry, I opened the box and saw a crunchy fried chicken with mayonnaise, a bowl of warm cooked rice and some fresh veggies. It was a box of KFC as a gift of her daughter’s birthday. “Thanks God!” I smiled happily. Fortunately, when she knew that I was alone, she gave the other small oval box of cake to me.

A little surprise at the end made me feel glad. Staying at homestay alone gave me chance to be more autonomous. I should decide everything by myself. Although I was alone, I tried to enjoy my life as good as possible. That was the memorable Saturday for me. ^_^

First Poem in Poetry Class

The Rebellion of an Orphan

I stood for a long time expecting miracles
Waiting for someone who loves me as a child
No one came down erasing my warm tears
Even gave me a hand bringing my inscrutable mind

I became fearful in this hypocrite chaos world
My little heart has turned to a hard rock
Let me make mistakes experiencing this real chord
Even it means I might be naive and freak

I sneaked out finding the wonderful horizon
Breaking out the sunshine free in dark way
My soul will reach the glory of misery season
Till God takes my awful fate away

                The rebellion of an orphan
                Till the red blood dry
                The rebellion of an orphan
                Till the black angel cry
